#FashionFridays: Rhett Eala’s Manila Fashion Festival Show

At the 4th night of the Manila Fashion Festival, designers Vic Barba, Randy Ortiz and Rhett Eala showcased their latest collections to the viewing public. What has gotten everyone mesmerized though are the parade of beauty queens and Filipina Supermodels that paraded on the ramp. Joan Bitagcol, Jodilly Pendre, Marie Ann Umali, Alaiza Malinao, Nicole Cordoves joined reigning Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina on the ramp.Rhett’s collection was all about capturing the heart and charm of a beauty queen in his “Queen” collection.

Here are several videos taken by @rowellrifrif

#FirstLook!!! Bb Pilipinas 2017 National Costume Set!

I have to say that the Binibining Pilipinas 2017 photoshoot was already underway several days before and the set design was very ornate.

According to several sources, the photoshoot by Ramond Saldaña for the national costume was made during the fitting presentations with Madame Stella Marquez Araneta. For those that came in prepared (with the finished ternos/costumes, headresses and other costume props), this meant that they were taken photographs on a set that was decorated with vintage chandeliers, flowers, pearls, lamps & candles, trinkets and huge gold frames to highlight the lavishness of the national costumes. As seen in the photo above of a certain candidate (in the single digits), the outcome photos is going to be faboosh!
So let’s just wait until the final reveal, but I can honestly say that the pics will definitely be something to look forward to…

Binibini 3 Maria Gail Tobes: #WinnerNaTOBES

What would happen if you splice the genes of Maxine Medina with that of Miriam Quiambao to clone another human being? Well you get Maria Gail Devora Tobes, your Binibini 3 this year…

Maria Gail Devora Tobes is not only blessed with good looks but brains as well. The 5’6″ beauty is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine who hails from Northern Samar. She has a classic Filipina features the likes of which is comparable to past Binibining Pilipinas Universe titleholders but don’t let that fool you. This girl is not a greenhorn in pageants. She was former Miss SCUAA (State Colleges and Universities Athletics Association) in 2015 and is now aiming for bigger fish to fry at this year’s Binibining Pilipinas.

Which gets me intrigued, will she have the poise and elan of Miriam Quiambao or the charm and grace of Maxine Medina? I am even more curious to know her better as the pageant finals approaches. I am sure that this lady from the Visayas is one to watch out for. After all, my moles tell me that she is a favorite of some Bb. Pilipinas insiders…

Miss World 2017 in Sanya, China

The New Silk Road Fashion Group and Miss World organization signed an agreement for Sanya to host the 20147 edition of the Miss World pageant…

In a news report wx.abbao.cn, the agreement was signed February 27th. This would be the 7th time that Sanya, China would host the Miss World finals after hosting in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2010 and 2015. No confirmed dates on the start of arrivals for the competition.
It is rumored that the pageant finals is to be held on December 2nd this year. And should the case that the Miss Universe pageant be held on the same month, then pageant girls who are competing in both competitions would have to choose either MW or MU.

Outgoing Miss World Stephanie del Valle of Puerto Rico will crown her successor in the resort paradise. She was crowned last year on the outskirts of of Washington DC, at the MGM National Harbor.

#ThrowbackThursdays: Angelique de Leon’s 2016 #FunArt

Around this time last year I released a number of #FunArt featuring Angelique de Leon, so I thought it would be a great idea to do a throwback on that.

The fun-art featured Angelique’s photo (as taken by then mentor RL Lacanienta, she has now moved on to Kagandahang Flores) super imposed on several famous western paintings by DaVinci and Botticelli. Angelique is on her third try for the Binibining Pilipinas (she was Binibini 31 in 2014 and Binibini7 last year) and I amquite hopeful that this time she will make it this time around. Insider rumors had said that she was a huge favorite last year by several people inside BBP, so it was quite a surprise that she missed the cut last year.

That is water under the bridge now as I believe that she is going to cement a placement this year among the winner’s circle. The 5’8″ curvaceous beauty is still one of my favorites this year.

The Most Photogenic Girls of Binibining Pilipinas 2017

If I were to pick only three Binibining Pilipinas girls to be named Miss Photogenic this year, I can say immediately the names of Mariel de Leon, Katarina Rodriguez and Charmaine Elima. In my opinion they are the girls who should be named the most photogenic in this year’s Binibining Pilipinas batch.

Maria Angelica de Leon undoubtedly has the face of an angel (just as her namesake says). To say that she photographs well is an understatement as even simple selfies without much photo-filters reveal how beautiful this girl is. Thanks to her movie-star genes from parents Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong, who seemed to pass on their best features on to her. Mariel in one fine lady that if she trims to her best physical shape could be on her way to any of the top 2 crowns in Binibining Pilipinas this year.

Katarina Rodriguez on the other hand is always expected to nail every shoot as she is an alum of Asia’s Next TopModel where she is one of those that almost always take good photographs. In fact, if fashion professionals and photographers  were to judge the award alone, the photogenic award might easily go to Katarina. This lady has interesting angles to her face which photographers would love to explore.

Charmaine Elima is another personal choice for this special award as I have seen how she photographs during shoots. Unfortunately we are no longer allowed to release any photos taken of her, so I can only give you a glimpse of how she looks like in those. I can honestly say she takes photos amazingly… but don’t take my word for it. Just check these her pics with light makeup. (Edit: makeup bu Turmeric Dionisio Balili and Hair by Bekbek Vasquez)
With the voting being split between photographers who covered the press presentation and the voting public, we might see some other names winning the much contested award. However, I already made my picks for this special award and I pick one of these three ladies to bag it home…

Mae Lanie Chan – OUT, Gillian Eliza Colcol – IN!

Mae Lanie Chan – OUT, Gillian Eliza Colcol – IN! That has been the latest update in the roster of Binibining Pilipinas 2017 candidates.

It’s back to 40 candidates for this year’s pageant and the latest addition to the roster of girls is Gillian Eliza Colcol, a 5’7″ Communication Arts graduate. In her Instagram account she posted this message:
#QueenGil has arrived! 👸🏽💋 Yes, it’s official — I’m your new #Binibini36, representing Antipolo City! Thanks for the support and prayers, God really moves in mysterious ways. So here I am again #innittowinit! 🙏🏼 #ForCrownForCountry #ForChrist #Binibini36GillianColcol #Antipoleña #Ilocona #Lasallian #HumanRightsAdvocate #KF #KFamilia #BbPilipinas2017

It’s crunch time for this lady as she needs to cope up with the rest of the girls. She needs to hit the ground running as several photoshoots like the national costume, the swimsuit and the Jag shoot is almost done. This KF-trained lass reminds me of a mix between Janela Joy Cuaton and Justine Felizarta in some of her photos. This makes a total 17 girls from the Kagandahang Flores camp into the final roster of candidates.

UPDATE: 9:15am, 03/31/2017
The latest photos of the candidates has been updated with the newest photos of Gillian Eliza Colcol. Both photos of her in swimsuit and Bb Pilipinas shirt have already been uploaded more than 56 times…

Miss Universe Iris Mittenaere for YOU.C1000

Earlier this March (before coming home to her Paris homecoming), Miss Universe Iris Mittenaere traveled to Bali, Indonesia to shoot her YOU.C1000 Vitamin Drink commercial.

The 5’8″ French beauty comes in a long line of reigning Miss Universe titleholders who traveled to Indonesia for this endorsement. Previous Miss Universe winners like Olivia Culpo, Paulina Vega, Dayana Mendoza and Pia Wurtzbach were all able to go visit Bali to shoot a commercial for the drink…

10 FACTS about #Binibini20 Christagale Borja

Binibini 20 Christagale Borja is one of the most underrated girls in this year’s competition. A common rookie mistake as this British-educated lass is more than just surface beauty alone. Christa has worked with one of the biggest global brands from one of the fashion capitals of the world, London with Marks & Spencer, a retailer of clothing and accessories for men’s, women’s and kids, food and groceries, etc…
Here’s the list of 10 things that you should know that makes this lady very interesting.

• She’s almost 5’10” in height

• She measures 34-23-34
• Moved to Great Britain at the age of 14.
• Graduated First Class Honours (Magna Cum Laude) at her university in London
• Advocate for animal rights. She volunteered for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home for over 3 years.

• Crowned Miss Philippines UK in 2015 and started modelling for international brands.
• She enjoys hip-hop dancing and cheerleading. In college, she competed for British Future Cheer whilst finishing her studies.
• She’s an advocate for women and children’s rights.
• Feminist
• Supporter of LGBT community
Education, height, body, face and intelligence, she all got those. So start keeping an eye on this lady, she is definitely one of the underdogs that could surprise you come finals.

Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters is Miss South Africa 2017!

A new stunning beauty has been crowned Miss South Africa 2017! Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters was crowned by outgoing queen Ntandoyenkosi Kunene, besting out Adè van Heerden who was crowned first princess and Boipelo Mabe as second princess.

Her Miss South Africa bio (as posted on the website) is as follows:
Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters from Sedgefield in the Western Cape is a 21-year-old final year B.Com business management and entrepreneurship student. She is also a part- time model at Boss Models and Vision Management. She was the first girl in her high school to be chosen as head girl of both the school and its hostel. Demi-Leigh was also elected as the Deputy Junior Mayor of the George City Council in grade 11. She makes handmade cards and does scrapbooking. She says her biggest motivator is her half-sister who was born without a cerebellum and is completely disabled.

Demi-Leigh is slated to compete in both Miss Universe and Miss World pageants.

#MANicMondays: Mr Tourism World, Okkar Min Maung

It’s no secret that Mister Tourism World, Okkar Min Maung is one hot hunk, and these photos are proof of just that…. So enjoy these collages to heat up your Manic Monday!

Male Pageant Winners & the Adult Film Industry Pt2

This is the second and final part of a 2-part series on male pageant winners and candidates who have appeared in the adult film industry.
While most male pageants are doing their best to elevate the image of the male pageant industry, everyone could find a lesson learned with the past errors illustrated in this post.

Michelle Merchán – he was a former candidate of Mister Handsome Venezuela in 2005. He became Maikel Cash after he joined the gay adult film industry and was at one time a gogo dancer is parts of Spain and other countries in Europe. He is signed with Lucas Entertainment.

Joel Garcia Osorio – he was named Mister Puerto Rico in 2014 but was almost stripped off his title following revelation that he had a gay porn video that was released prior to coronation. He was allowed to keep his title following clamor from the public for him to retain his title.
Osmar Sanjurjo Rivera – back in 2012, while he was still a teenager (around 18 years old) he was chosen among the candidates of Misters of Puerto Rico as Mister Teen Globe Puerto Rico. However he now goes with the name of Ashton Summers under gay adult film outfit Lucas Entertainment.

Ryan Oliver – he was named Mister Panama in 2009 but was later dethroned after he was found out to have had a couple of jack-off videos for a porn website called ‘Sean Cody’. He was named ‘Andy’ in those videos.

We can no longer do anything with those that have gone into careers in the adult film industry but what can be done nowadays is to ensure that a feasible career is given by pageant orgs to their winners. It is no longer enough that we see them crowned and post a selfie or two on social media. There is a need for pageant organizations to create a career path for these gentlemen as they set out to do their reign. Organizations cannot just crown winners and leave them off to fend for themselves.
Male pageant orgs and competitions are nowadays “dime a dozen” and it should be their responsibility that their winners should not leave their midst broken or unfulfilled.

Those are the names of the titles held by American representatives to Miss World and it still continues to evolve as different national franchise holders changes the titles. Earlier this month, the national directorship of the pageant has changed to Elizabeth Safrit and her mother Lynne Safrit. Elizabeth was a former Miss World 2nd Princess to Rolene Strauss of South Africa. This is the fourth change of franchise holder in a span of 6 years. Alexandria Mills had a different parent org when she won the Miss World title back in 2010 and in 2012 nobody knows who held the license for the US. The US has changed license holders/ national directors at least a dozen times!
* UPDATE (January  30, 2018) – Elizabeth Safrit announced in a Facebook post that she and her mother, Lynne, would be parting ways with the Miss World organization and would no longer hold the US franchise for the pageant. Her letting go of the MW franchise marks the 13th franchise change for the Miss World USA/ America title.

Their case is not unique as the Philippines also have passed on the license from Miss Republic of the Philippines, Mutya ng Pilipinas, Binibining Pilipinas and Miss World Philippines titles. The most recent change was the transfer of the franchise from Cory Quirino to Arnold Vegafria after she held the franchise for 6 years.

Angelique de Leon’s Transformation

Several days back Binibini 12 Angelique de Leon had a meet and greet with her Angeliqueens over dinner. During the FB live video of the said meet and I greet, I still saw the same bubbly and cheerful lady I met a year ago in Jakarta.

To say that Angelique has personality is an understatement, she has loads of it that it overflows. I am still quite at awe at how she can easily put people at ease with her. Although I still see her bubbly personality, I am also seeing a different sense of womanly confidence. Her transformation for the 2017 pageant is visible in the way she speaks and moves. She is a bit more refined these days yet still have that energy around her. The personality is still there but held back to show a more mature vibe. I know you don’t get a sense of that in photos but it can be observed in her videos.

I am confident that a crown is up for grabs for this woman. Which crown I am not yet sure. I have high hopes that Binibining Pilipinas Intercontinental or Supranational is within her reach. Although I wouldn’t also mind her getting the Miss Universe Philippines title instead…
