#Nostalgia: Miss Universe Curacao 1996-97 Verna Vasquez

She was one of the most gorgeous women to ever walk the Miss Universe stage and her name is Verna Vasquez.

I remember I did a post on Verna back in 2016 on the old blog. Unfortunately data from the old blog could no longer be retrieved, so I thought I should do a new one for her with updated photos. It is quite difficult to find good resolution photos of her and I don’t know why since her face is loved absolutely by the cameras. It is not surprising that she was Miss Photogenic during the Miss Curacao pageant.

A number of pageant fans thought that this girl should have been in the top 3 of Miss Universe 1997 and most of us who followed the pageant in the 90’s thought the same. She should have won Miss Universe on face value and sheer physical beauty alone. That is why a number of beauty pageant experts at that time had her as the most likely winner in their predictions that year.
Verna had the highest preliminary score that year in Miami only to settle among the top 6 finalists during the coronation night. She also had the highest swimsuit score (9.62) and evening gown score (9.79) during the finals. And here is another trivia, among the televised evening gown scores ever published Verna was in the top 10 highest evening gown scores of all time!

Some pageant fans said that had she used her native language for the q&a she would have easily coasted through the top 3. Back then, the top 6 q&a was the sole basis if a girl makes top 3 in Miss Universe. Only when you made top 3 that the judges weight in the overall performance of the girls in their scoring/ ranking on who wins Miss Universe.

Curacao has yet to send a delegate as strong as Verna in Miss Universe. Earlier in 2015, they managed to make top 10 with Kanesha Sluis. I hope that one day in the immediate future someone like Verna Vasquez would be seen representing the lovely country of Curacao…

Once When the Philippines held 3 of the 4 Alpha Pageant Titles

Once in 2016, the Philippines held three of the four Alpha pageant titles even if it was just for a very brief moment.

Awaiting the coronation of the 2016 winners of Miss Universe and Miss World…

Today’s #ThrowbackThursdays, I wanted to take a look back at that moment in 2016.  From October 27th until the evening of October 29th, the Philippines held the Miss International 2016 title courtesy of Kylie Verzosa with the then reigning Miss Miss Earth Angelia Gabrena Ong(before Katherine Espin of Ecuador was crowned Miss Earth 2016) and Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach. Mireia Lalaguna hasn’t passed her title yet at that time.

Once when the Philippines held 3 of the 4 Alpha pageant titles…

Would we ever have this moment again in the future?

#ThrowbackThursdays: Which Country Ruled the 90’s, Venezuela or India?

Over the years, pageant fans have asked what country dominated pageantry in the 1990’s. Some are quick to say that it is India who holds this distinction but I am here to fact check to see whether or not India or Venezuela who dominated that decade…

India

Miss Universe 1994, Sushmita Sen
Miss World 1994, Aishwarya Rai
Miss World 1997, Diana Hayden
Miss World 1999, Yukta Mookhey
Venezuela
Miss World 1991, Ninibeth Leal
Miss World 1995, Jacqueline Aguilera
Miss Universe 1996, Alicia Machado
Miss International 1997, Consuelo Adler

In terms of number of crowns won, both countries equaled each other. So we look into the runner up placement to break the tie and we see that Venezuela leads with 10 runner up placements to India’s 4.
Venezuela
Sharon Luengo, 2nd runner up MW1990
Francis Gago, 2nd runner up MW1992
Milka Chulina, 2nd runner up MU1993
Irene Ferreira, 2nd runner up MW1994
Minorka Mercado, 2nd runner up MU1994
Ana Maria Amorer, 1st runner up MI1995
Marena Bencomo, 1st runner up MU1997
Verushka Ramirez, 1st runner up MU1998
Daniela Kosan, 1st runner up MI1998
Martina Thorogood, 1st runner up MW1999

India
Madhu Sapre, 2nd runner up MU1992
Manpreet Brar, 1st runner up MU1995
Diya Abraham, 1st runner up MI1997
Shvetha Jaishankar,  2nd runner up MI1998

Despite this, it is safe to say that the 1990’s belonged to both India and Venezuela. Pageantry in that decade was always a hot contest between the two powerhouses… and when people thought of pageantry in the 90’s, they only remember those two.
PS: This list covers only the Alpha pageants MU, MI and MW as ME was only conceived in 2000.

Nostalgia: Jacqueline Aguilera, Alicia Machado & Consuelo Adler

I have earlier written about countries that have managed to win major crowns in consecutive years. One particular country that have achieved that was Venezuela. One particular set of wins that stood out were those of Jacqueline Aguilera Marcano, Alicia Machado and Consuelo Adler who won Miss World 199, Miss Universe 1996 and Miss International 1997 respectively.

Jacqueline, Alicia and Consuelo were the second set of ladies coming from a single country to have won all of the 3 Alpha pageants back then? Of course, the Miss Earth wasn’t included as it started only in 2001. But these three ladies did something that only Astrid Carolina Herrera, Nina Sicilia and Barbara Palacios Teyde was able to achieve. And guess what, they also came from Venezuela!

But These three girls also have one thing in common… they all are recipients of the Miss Photogenic award. Jacqueline won the photogenic award during the Miss World pageant. Alicia was Miss Photogenic during the Miss Venezuela 1995 pageant. But it is Consuelo who is the most photogenic of them all as she won the award both in Miss Venezuela 1996 pageant as well as in Miss International 1997. In terms of height though, Alicia is the shortest of them at 5’8″. Both Consuelo and Jacqueline towers at 5’11” tall.

Miriam Quiambao’s Miss Universe Proportions

Today’s #ThrowbackThursdays slash PhotoCollage of the day post is an homage to Miss Universe 1999 1st runner up, Miriam Quiambao.

Rumor has it that the 5’8″ lass was the favored girl to win the competition by MUOrg. It is even said that she closely resembles the Miss Universe logo with her body proportions.
In these photocollages, Miriam shows her divine body/ bone structure. Thin and very modelesque. It was no wonder that she was 2nd overall during the finals night swimsuit competition despite not wearing a two piece swimsuit. Her lovely body is also well styled in these photos below when she trained in Venezuela under the Osmel Sousa’s team of pageant experts.

Since then, we haven’t seen a Filipina with her reed thin modelesque proportions (although Venus Raj comes close) that looks like the MU logo. Hopefully when we do find one, we could send her to the Miss Universe pageant…

#ThrowbackThursdays: Angelique de Leon’s 2016 #FunArt

Around this time last year I released a number of #FunArt featuring Angelique de Leon, so I thought it would be a great idea to do a throwback on that.

The fun-art featured Angelique’s photo (as taken by then mentor RL Lacanienta, she has now moved on to Kagandahang Flores) super imposed on several famous western paintings by DaVinci and Botticelli. Angelique is on her third try for the Binibining Pilipinas (she was Binibini 31 in 2014 and Binibini7 last year) and I amquite hopeful that this time she will make it this time around. Insider rumors had said that she was a huge favorite last year by several people inside BBP, so it was quite a surprise that she missed the cut last year.

That is water under the bridge now as I believe that she is going to cement a placement this year among the winner’s circle. The 5’8″ curvaceous beauty is still one of my favorites this year.

#ThrowbackThursdays: Miss International 1964 Gemma Cruz Trivia!

It has been 52 years since the Philippines has first won the Miss International title with Gemma Theresa Cruz.

* She comes from a family of renown, her great-grandmother Maria was the sister of national hero José Rizal.
* Leon Ma. Guerrero III, who was once Philippine Ambassador to Spain and England, was her uncle and was opposed to Gemma’s participation in the Miss Philippines pageant.
*  Gemma’s mom, Carmen Guerrero Nakpil, offered her P2,000 to back out from the Miss International pageant.
* There was no expectation from her to win, in a Rappler interview she said, “Nobody in the Philippines expected me to win. I did not conform to the Filipino’s idea of beauty.”
* Gemma donated all her Miss International $10,000 cash prize to build homes for children sleeping on the streets of Manila, the Boys’ Town.
* She went to bed with her crown and scepter despite appeals from pageant officials. The crown, trimmed with rhinestones, and scepter were only on loan from a costume company and due to be returned the next day.

Megan Vs Pia: the Magazine Cover Battle Pt2

Early this year, we featured Miss World 2013 Megan Young and Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach in a magazine cover battle as both Filipina titleholders seems to have graced the covers of almost the same magazines. Several months later we still find some mags that both girls appeared in. This is not to pit the two queens against each other but rather a fun way of seeing who among them did better in their covers… Who do you think nailed their covers better?

#ThrowbackThursdays: Pia Wurtzbach for Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam

For today’s #ThrowbackThursdays, we feature reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach’s photos for Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam shot by New York based photographer Raen Badua…

The left photo was rumored to have been submitted as possible magazine cover but was not picked, unfortunately.
