New Eligibility Rules of the Miss Universe Pageant

Miss Universe CEO Amy Emmerich forwards a memo to national directors indicating pregnant women, married/divorced women and single mothers are allowed to join the pageant.

And such pronouncement is turning the Miss Universe pageant community into a whirling buzz of opposing ideas and ideals. Some commented that the pandering to the woke community is getting out of hand, while others lament that this is just a copycat move from the Miss France organization’s move to allow married women and mothers to join their pageant.

The organization claims in an internal memo that it has always made an effort to change with the times and that the most recent choice was the logical next step. The below screencapture/screengrab of the said memo has been distributed and shared on various social media channels indicating the changes were made based on conducted surveys by the pageant organization.

The 72nd pageant, which will take place in 2023, will be subject to the new regulations. The preliminary pageants for Miss Universe 2022, which will be held later this year, have already been staged.

While there is a polarized opinions on this matter, Sashes&Scripts’ stance in this so far is one that is on the fence. We think that the best way to process this new ruling is to wait further on how it will be implemented and the technicalities/ legal wordings of the rules of eligibility will be laid out. At this point there is yet so much information that needs to be learned and questions need answering. Will this move towards inclusivity alienate its remaining audience? Only time will tell.

  1. If I was participating in the pageant I wouldn’t feel comfortable with competing with them. Especially married women who financially supported because they are married. They should make it separate pageant for the women. But I would love for them to increase the age to at least 40 but it would be harder for younger girls to win because older women have a different attitude and higher confidence. Older women tend to have more knowledge and know what they want in life. Its not fair!!!

  2. Congratulations and kudos to Miss Universe team for taking this bold and inclusive step meeting the needs of current global environment. Along with this new rule to include married/divorcee/mothers female candidates, can the criteria be expanded to include women up to age 30 or even higher to be even more inclusive?

  3. I disagree with this process, there should be a separate pageant for these women to compete in, it should never be combined. I understand the concept of “one world, one love” but this is just outrageous.

    1. For married women and mothers, is it maybe wise to consider the emotional stress of balancing the emotional well-being of the family, career and pageant life? Make it a different pageant. People will still watch, if only to comment.
