Will a Black Woman be Miss Universe 2019?

Are the stars lining up for another black Miss Universe winner?

When Atlanta, Georgia was announced to be the venue for this year’s Miss Universe pageant, one of the thoughts we had was: this will bode well for women color specially black women.

This could ring true specially with the city being majority populated by Afro-Americans. The racial makeup and population of Atlanta in 2014 was 51.4% Black or African American, 41.3% White, 3.7% Asian and 4.7% Hispanics. The finals venue as well, Tyler Perry Studios, is an American film production studio that mainly produces Afro-American-centric films.
Currently the Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, and the Miss America winners are all dark skinned women. Even the reigning Miss Earth USA, Emanii Davis who recently won as Miss Earth-Air, is also of African-American origins and also hails from Georgia. 2019 might be the year that we will finally see an all-black winners for the Miss Universe organization pageant system.

In the history of the MU pageant only 5 dark-skinned women have been crowned as winners. Two have been from Africa. Two have been from the Caribbean(all from Trinidad & Tobago) and only one from the USA. They are:

  1. Leila Lopes (2011), Angola
  2. Mpule Kwelagobe (1999), Botswana
  3. Wendy Fitzwilliam (1998), Trinidad and Tobago
  4. Chelsi Smith (1995), USA
  5. Janelle Commissiong (1977), Trinidad and Tobago

We believe that the possibilities of having another black winner to be high. This would be a great marketing publicity for the pageant and a first for the pageant system to have all 3 of its winners to be dark-skinned.
It would be a great image booster for the pageant specially in a generation of ‘woke’ audiences. This might even help boost gather more audiences for the pageant after last year’s ratings decline. There are a number of great dark-skinned women candidates this year as well as a number of mixed raced beauties of color. It would be interesting to see what would happen next for the next chapters of the pageant.

  1. South Africa seems to be the strongest black contender. In addition, she defies the Western standards of beauty with her unapologetically black look.
