2020 Binibining Pilipinas Grand, Samantha Bernardo was perfection on stage during the Miss Grand International preliminary competition! Held at the Show DC Hall in Bangkok, the preliminaries featured all 63 candidates performing in their swimsuit and evening gowns…
For the trained eye of this pageant connoisseur, it was quite clear that Samantha’s preliminary performance is arguably the best in this year’s batch. The 5’8″ Filipina stunner delivered a consistently well executed performance from the Swimsuit press presentation, the National Costume show and now the MGI preliminaries.
The eighth edition of Miss Grand International is currently ongoing in Bangkok, Thailand and they recently had their national costume show. On March 24, 2021, the 63 candidates of Miss Grand International 2020 showcased their culture and beauty in the national costume competition.
Here are our favorite costumes from last night’s live show. These are listed alphabetically:
It was a Binibining Pilipinas journey that started in 2018, and three years later all the hardwork of Palawan’s Samantha Bernardo is paying off!
The very first time that we have written about this Palawenya was back in January of 2018. Even then she has this Bea Rose Santiago and Angelee delos Reyes vibes to her that we felt that a national title will fit perfectly on her head. Two consecutive 2nd runner up placements later, we were still on the high hopes that a Binibining Pilipinas title would fall on her lap. And it did in the most gratifying way!
From the time she is announced as the new Binibining Pilipinas Grand International to her departure today, Samantha Bernardo only have around 20 days to prepare for the pageant.
Whilst she might have had some heads-up earlier on at the last couple of weeks of January, she is full steam ahead from the February 5 official announcement to her departure today. Prior to her confirmation she and her team (from stylist Sir KennethR, Tito Rodgil Flores and her camp) Samantha is already able to film her intro video, prep for a new wardrobe, train with her mentors on catwalk, make-up and hairstyling, etc…
During the heat of the Miss International age controversy several weeks ago, Sashes&Scripts has been at the crux of our controversial stand to freeze age requirements during the pandemic. In those times we specifically refused to drop names that would be affected by it, but now after things have cooled down considerably, we’ll explain the wisdom in our stance.
Because of the after effects of the global halt in live events caused by the pandemic, most pageant fans seem to believe that the world-wide vaccination roll out would be easy-peasy. That is quite far from the stark reality that the scenario of a global vaccination is most likely achieved around the end of the year 2022 or in 2023. That will cause pageants to be continuously in a state of postponements and delays. Hence it would have been more humane and compassionate to have had international competitions freeze their age requirements until the next set of winners are crowned.
That would have been a great gift to Vickie Marie Rushton who is currently 28 years old and would be eligible only to one pageant franchise under the Binibining Pilipinas pageant. This would also have benefitted Miss International Romania Bianca Paduraru, who had to be replaced due to the Miss International organization rescinding their previous announcement of allowing those within the eligible age in 2020 to compete in 2021.
Of course we also know now the heart-breaking situation of Binibining Pilipinas Grand International 2019, Aya Abesamis who would also been perfect for the Miss Grand International pageant only if the organization allowed her to compete despite being 29 years old. Aya, who was elevated to the MGI crown after Samantha Lo resigned, was the 1st runner up in the 2019 pageant. Since Aya was no longer eligible to compete, 2019 Bb. Pilipinas 2nd runner up Samantha Bernardo is then tapped to assume the title of Binibining Pilipinas Grand International 2020.
While we respect the “their pageant, their rules” philosophy, it does not hurt to act humanely like the Miss Universe pageant did in 2014, when the pageant was postponed to January of 2015. This delay would have meant that Mary Jean Lastimosa wouldn’t be allowed to compete due to age restrictions back then. However, the Miss Universe organization froze their age rules as the pageant postponement wasn’t within the control of the candidates. That same analogy should have been also applicable to these two Binibinis. Most specially when a global pandemic is the cause.
BLOGGER’S NOTE: the Miss Universe pageant issued an update recently to their age requirements. It now stated that “MISS UNIVERSE delegates must be at least 18 years of age and under 28 years of age on the date the National competition commenced.” Hence, candidates who turn 29 this year are eligible as long as they were crowned/ appointed at age 28 during their respective national pageants/ appointments.
It is also quite ironic that the pageant fans who reacted violently when we strongly worded a critique on MIO (using the shock of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor) arguing that pageant orgs have their own rules, are also the same fans who were clamouring for Aya be allowed to compete by the MGIOrg. Suddenly their reasoning that pageant organizations are independent entities able to make their own decisions are tossed out of the window simply because that narrative no longer serve their purpose.
This is where we had the foresight that if an Alpha pageant like the Miss International organization would be unbending when it announced the change in age eligibility, other pageant organizations are like to follow their lead. We weren’t pushing only for MI to be compassionate, we wanted that had they been flexible, it would have been easier for other organizations to be convinced to do the same. That would mean that Vickie would have a shot at the Binibining Pilipinas International crown and Aya would be sent to the 2020 edition of the MGI pageant. And everything would have been all right in the pageant world…
When the announcement that Samantha Bernardo is the official Philippine candidate for the Miss Grand International pageant this March, we were hardly surprised.
You see, we were already clued in with Samantha’s appointment about a week prior to her announcement last February 5th. One of our insider pageant friends (IPF)have clued us in that the Miss Grand International pageant might have been emboldened by the Miss International pageant’s rescinding of their previous age limits. Of course that was a rumor still, but when IPF said that the age issue is a contention in the talks our gut told us that the talks probably is going downhill.
Then came a second IPF telling us that the Facebook screenshot of Samantha “shopping around” for travel insurance. That was when I was able to put together pieces of the puzzle. And this was just last January 30th. It also doesn’t hurt that we have common acquaintances inside BPCI who has all but verbally confirmed our suspicions by February 1st. So when we messaged Samantha’s main stylist, Sir Kenneth, we kind of knew that the announcement is about to happen within the first week of February. During our conversation, Sir asked me to keep whatever I knew a secret for the time being. And just for everyone’s information, Sir Kenneth was very tight lipped and didn’t confirm or deny what I knew. Such a professional. And so wait, we did.
Then the confirmation came. Samantha is named Miss Grand Philippines 2020.
Her appointment didn’t come without some fan confusion. First to come is the question why Samantha and not Aya Abesamis? Was this announcement with the blessing of the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc.?
As mentioned, age became the deciding factor in the eventual appointment of Samantha. It seemed that the MGIOrg was adamant about their age eligibility rules and no matter how hard negotiations were, Aya was simply not eligible because of her age. This meant that the BPCI would have to offer the title to the next eligible queen (yes, you heard that right, it has to be a winner not a candidate) who ticks all the box. Samantha being the 2019 Binibining Pilipinas 2nd runner up is the only other eligible queen to ascend. While she may have relinquished her runner up post to be able to compete again, it is possible that talks were made to settle out their contracts which meant that Sam would have to give up her current BBP candidacy. Now, doesn’t that make better sense?
While it may have taken days for BPCI to put forth an official statement, it is not unlikely for the organization to have any public statements be reviewed first by their legal team before posting anything on social media. What they did instead was to share the official MGI announcement on their social media accounts instead to quench the public’s interest and queries. Sashes&Scripts also posted on our Instagram Stories the clarification from the org that Samantha has the blessing of the BPCI. This dispelled any doubts of her ascension to the throne. Once an official statement has been approved, it is then posted on their official channels.
This is what we admire about the BPCI organization, they may be at times too “by the book” but such measures have kept them out of trouble in their 60+ years of existence. Official communications have to go through the proper channels for approval and is announced officially in their official social media channels (and not through a Facebook Live chat).
Every pageant fans knows Samantha is a penultimate pageant performer, so we are without a doubt sure that this lady from Palawan will deliver her best come pageant finals. She has the face, the body, the height (she’s actually around 5’8 1/2″) and the wits to accompany her drive to always perform. Win, Lose or Draw, expect that the Binibining Pilipinas 3-timer would always be on top of her game specially this time. An opportunity like this doesn’t come easy and we are sure that Samantha would not take on representing the Philippines lightly. Samantha is going to perform. Period.
So, do we see the first MGI win for the Philippines? We wouldn’t want to jinx it so we say, we are 100% positive that Samantha will give everyone in the competition a run for their money and will give the MGI organization a freakin’ helluva show…
The longest running and most prestigious pageant in the Philippines is the Binibining Pilipinas pageant. It is the reason why most Filipina beauty queen wannabe wants to join and win the national tilt, even as to join more than once.
But not every Binibining Pilipinas is as lucky enough as following ladies who returned to compete and clinched a runner up placement or even a title on their next try.
NOTE: this is a lengthy read. So please have the patience to go through all the names of the ladies who are in the list.
THE NEVER SAY DIE BINIBINIS
If ladies flock to join and re-join the BBP pageant year in and year out, then the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Incorporated (BPCI) must be doing something right. There are over 20 BBP repeaters who would later win a crown in the pageant. Continue reading “Successful Binibining Pilipinas Repeaters”
Samantha Mae Bernardo and Vickie Marie Rushton have dedicated three years of their life to the Binibining Pilipinas pageant. Would this year be the year that they finally find themselves with a crown?
Ever since Maricar Balagtas and Mary Jean Lastimosa pioneered joining the Binibining Pilipinas pageant three times before securing a crown, a number of ladies seem to have followed their footsteps. Most famous of them is Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach who joined the competition form 2013 to 2015. So competing three times in a row is nothing new.
2018 was the year that we first saw Samantha and Vickie in the Binibining Pilipinas pageant. We knew then that the two ladies would be possible titleholders but why hasn’t they been crowned yet? These are our thoughts…
This is how you level up in a pageant!
The Binibining Pilipinas pageant continues to give reasons why they still are the most prestigious pageant in the country.
Looking at how the 40 candidates look so fresh and vibrant in their photos wearing the official Binibining Pilipinas shirt reminds us that well selected and well edited photos are still a MUST in pageants. Pageant organizations should invest on high quality shots of their candidates so that they are always presented in a proper manner.
Truth be told it was difficult to narrow down the list to just 12 as over-all the photos of the candidates well really good. It’s the proverbial ‘walang tapon‘ if we might add.
We would like to mention several ladies who almost made it in our top 12 list like Patricia Babista, Lois Badando, Shaira Rona, Vianca Marcelo, Jash Dimaculangan, Honey Cartasano and Faith Garcia. With that being said, let’s list down the 12 ladies that did best in their official Binibining Pilipinas shirt photos…
1. Samantha Bernardo – she gave the most unique pose and it paid off. She is perhaps the only one to do a 3/4 view from the back which showcased enough of her body and face. 2. Hannah Arnold – simple works and Hannah gave us simple but strong. The focal point is her face and she gave good face in the pic. Had her pose be a little more strong and created more curves, she would have been our top pick. It would have been a stronger image had the body pose been equally strong as her facial expression. Proving itself to be the premier national pageant in the country, the Binibining Pilipinas pageant has rolled out activity one after the other over the past 3 weeks.
From the amazing Talent Show, to the Gateway Museum tour, art and painting workshops, down to the flower crown making at the Farmers’ Garden, the Binibinis continued to impress pageant media and fans alike. In those activities, we’ve observed the ladies that are continually pulling away from the competition.
Who are the ladies that are performing well in the recent Binibining Pilipinas activities this past weeks? Here are the ladies that comprise our 2nd Leaderboard!
Honey Grace Cartasano
Karen Laurrie Mendoza
Vickie Marie Rushton
Danica Joy Acuña
Alexandra Mae Rosales
Hazel Joy Ortiz
By this point, some of the girls are already showing signs of stress on their lovely faces and some are already suffering break outs. So we strongly advice on a skincare routine for the ladies.
We’d like to comment on several girls who is improving consistently. Gabby Basiano is starting to pull ahead and finding herself among the frontrunner category. She is always on point style-wise and her skin is absolutely glowing. Samantha Bernardo’s low key gameplan is taking a bit of getting use to, but you’d know she’s got some tricks up her sleeve. Vickie Rushton and Maureen Montagne are some of the girls who are always glowing in person and in their daily activities. Loving the energy that Alexandra Mae Rosales is exuding, fresh and young but very much one of the underdogs to look out for. Then we have Meiji Cruz who is starting to get more noticed as the days go by. We are also on the low-key lookout on Alexangela “Gila” Salvador and Samantha Panlilio as these two are among the well-spoken ladies.
What do you think of our list? Let us know if there is any of the ladies that you think should be included on the comments below!
Joining a national pageant takes tremendous commitment. But joining the Binibining Pilipinas for three straight years is a testament of one’s loyalty and determination.
And that is what Samantha Bernardo is showing us for this past 3 years.
Ending up with the same 2nd runner up finish in the Binibining Pilipinas pageant for two consecutive years is nothing short of heart-breaking for one who is aiming for a title. More so with Samantha who has been eyeing a Binibining Pilipinas crown since 2018. She could have opted to join the Miss Universe Philippines pageant and yet she kept her loyalties to the BPCI. Because of that loyalty, she has endeared herself to pageant fans. That kind of loyalty is rare for girls who are more accustomed to pageant hopping if they aren’t getting the results that they wanted.
With her third try, she visibly is more relaxed nowadays. The ‘gigil factor’ has gone down and is replaced with a quiet confidence. But that doesn’t mean she’s slacking behind, it only shows how she is retooling her strategies so as not to put full efforts on areas that need not be given too much attention to. And to reserve her energies on areas that matters most. These days you see her with a more natural approach to her hair and makeup. In person she also exudes an aura of a woman who has no baggage going into the Binibini competition.
It is our belief that when a more relaxed and fun approach to pageants is employed, a pageant girl’s chances is higher. It is that resignation to enjoy the experience while giving it your best is the best way towards securing a victory, crown or no crown. That is what we are seeing and hope to see more from Samantha. And hopefully a Binibining Pilipinas crown by the end of the finals night in April 26th…
The criteria for the Binibining Pilipinas judging still places 50% value to beauty of face. And there was no shortage of beautiful ladies in the BBP 2020 Talent show.
But if we are to narrow down the ladies that stood out during the Binibining Pilipinas 2020 Talent show, it will all boil down to these 4 ladies…
Vickie Marie Rushton
She is the proverbial ‘face that could launch a thousand ships’ but it is her demeanor that endears her to fans. Vickie isn’t the overly aggressive type in pageants but she still does get noticed. And this is very evident after the show where it took almost 30 minutes for the crowd around her to subside. The 5’6″ stunner gamely posed for pics with her fans and loyal supporters with patience, a trait you’d want in a winner.
Gabrielle “Gabby” Basiano
She’s got the face and the height to be noticed among the bevy of 40 candidates this year. Gabby is quite modelesque owing to her 5’10” frame. She is one of the tallest ladies in the batch this year and it would be a shame to let her potential go to waste. Not a fan of her red dress in the show but her white outfit after made her look more stunning. Gabby might be the sleeper hit in this batch. It has barely been two weeks since the final screening of the Binibining Pilipinas pageant and we already have several names that pageant fans should watch out for.
This is our list of the ladies that pageant fans have to watch out for.
Vickie Marie Rushton
Honey Grace Cartasano
Karen Laurrie Mendoza
But those aren’t only the ladies to watch out for. Granted that the aforementioned ladies are the initial standouts, but there are several other ladies that are noteworthy to mention in the list. Here they are in random order…
Alexandra Faith Garcia
Alexandra Mae Rosales
Lesley Anne Ticaro
Lois Anne Badando
Ma. Francesca Taruc
