Rumor Mill: 69th Miss Universe to Copy Elements from Miss Earth 2020?

Is the 69th Miss Universe pageant gonna copy several elements from the virtual pageant of the Miss Earth 2020?

There are a number of rumors floating around that the Miss Universe will adapt or adopt some of the things that we have seen Miss Earth do in their 2020th edition. While these rumors are yet to be verified, it does shed light on how the virtual Miss Earth pageant has opened a new way of doing pageants during these times.

DISCLAIMER: these are only rumors and no confirmation can be made. Be reminded that these should be taken with a grain of salt and should not be considered confirmed until an official announcement is made public.

Photoshoots and Introduction Videos with a Uniform Background and Concept

One of the things that we have been hearing around is that all candidates are to be photographed with similar backgrounds that will be used for their MU website profiles, as well as introduction videos & “getting to know you” interviews pre-taped and submitted.

Every year, Miss Earth candidates are requested to send over headshots with white backgrounds every year to be uploaded to the ME website. This seems to be the same for MU as rumor has it that the candidates are asked to shoot headshots and glam pics with a uniform background. Candidates’ and their organizations will have to shell out from their own pockets to have professional images taken.

Candidates are also said to be advised to shoot their own intro videos that will be used for the pageant, something similar to the eco-videos that ME candidates submit and are posted on the ME YouTube channel. In case of the MU pageant, the rumor is that candidates are given some fun and light-hearted “get to know you” basic questions to which their responses are videoed and taped. Some introduction vids are said to be asked of the candidates as well which we assume to be used for the pageant finals in the get-to-know-your-semifinalists segment of the show.

How about a virtual performance of these artists for the 69th Miss Universe edition?
Half-virtual & Half-live Competition

If we are to look at the Miss Earth preliminaries, judging was made through online submissions of pre-taped videos. This may well happen in Miss Universe judging at how the Miss USA pageant did their preliminary interviews via Skype or Zoom. Looking back at the intelligence preliminaries of the ME pageant, a similar

It is speculated that a number of pre-pageant activities will be removed and will solely focus on rehearsals for the preliminaries an finals night. Unlike ME whose entire pageant schedule lasted a month, the MU is adapting to have something similar to the schedule in Atlanata last year with 9-10 days or even probably less.

Hence, video interviews, press junkets, registration and fittings, etc… are some of the things that are rumored to be scrapped in the upcoming edition. What is left instead are the actual preliminary show and finals night of the pageant that will happen live.

Sashes&Scripts’ Take

On a personal note, we do not know what to think of with these new set of rumors. It is still possible that these might change depending on what will happen in the next several months. A new strain of the Corona virus spreading through England, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Italy an Australia, which could affect the pageant timetables. This strain somehow found its way now to Singapore. A different mutated strain is also found in South Africa. Hence we all might be bracing to hear possibility of the 69th edition done via a virtual pageant much like Miss Earth.

What do you think? Is it possible for Miss Universe to go the same direction as Miss Earth and do a virtual pageant instead?
