Keysi Sayago: The 3rd Woman of Color to Win Miss Venezuela

Keysi Sayago’s victory as Miss Venezuela should be celebrated because she is the first woman of color to win the title since Jictzad Viña in 2005.
For a country that is described by Osmel Sousa where “dark girls are not pretty in Venezuela”, Keysi’s victory surely has made several heads turn. In the history of the pageant, only three women of color has managed to win the top crown. The list includes Carolina Indriago in 1998, Jictzad Viña in 2015 and now Keysi Sayago this 2016. While it may not be an earthshaking victory, it could usher in more acceptance for women of color to win the national pageant in Venezuela where half of the population claimed to be moreno, a term used t that means “dark-skinned” or “brown-skinned”.
22 year-old Keysi stands 5’10” and will be representing Venezuela in Miss Universe 2017. She was solely crowned as winner following incessant rumors that the Miss Venezuela organization has lost franchises for the Miss Earth, Miss International and Miss World pageants due to the ongoing financial crisis in their country.
